Adding paving stones to existing sidewalk
December 16, 2009

Q. Would it be possible to lay paving stones over an existing concrete sidewalk?
I would like to add some character to a plain backyard walkway that is about 20 years old. The concrete seems to be quite level and I don’t want to tear out the concrete if possible.

A. To begin you have to consider if the added height of the pavers over the concrete will conflict with any adjacent sidewalks or driveways etc. You could be increasing the height of the existing patio by about 3 or more inches. I suggest you place your paving stones over Donnacona Board (available at building supply stores) the weight of the pavers will compress into the Donnacona holding them in place. It’s also a good idea to crib around the patio deck with 1x4 or 1x6 to hold everything together. Note: No sand is required.
